National Shrine of
Saint Francis of Assisi

Pilgrimages, Tours and Events

The Archbishop of San Francisco, The Most Reverend Salvatore J. Cordileone, has entrusted the care and operation of the National Shrine, which includes the Shrine Church, La Porziuncola Nuova, and the Rectory/office to the Capuchin Franciscans of the West America Province in the person of the Rector.

Over the years, the Parish Church of St. Francis, having been closed and then re-opened as a National Shrine, some confusion has arisen over the authority, operation and scheduling of events and pilgrimages at the Shrine Church, Church Hall and La Porziuncola Nuova.

This announcement is designed to establish very clearly all reporting and scheduling lines of authority regarding the National Shrine of St. Francis of Assisi.

All pilgrimages, tours, presentations, requests for the use of the facilities for musical and art programs and requests for representatives of the National Shrine to address outside groups MUST be processed through the National Shrine offices and approved by the Rector. Just as the Pastor and Rectory offices of the Archdiocesan Parishes exert authority over all events and facilities affecting their Parishes, no individual, group or entity has the authority to speak on behalf of the National Shrine or any of its facilities including the Church, Hall and Porziuncola, or schedule events except for the Rector and subsequently, the Shrine offices.

Events not scheduled through the Shrine offices will not be allowed. You must call 415-986-4557 or email for all approvals.

Additionally, all printed material and announcements promoting any/all events at the facilities of the National Shrine or being distributed on National Shrine premises must feature the National Shrine as the hosting/primary entity and must be approved by the Rector's office PRIOR to publication and distribution.
